Are Virtual Tours Realistic?

Let me ask for some opinions. When you take a "virtual tour," how close is it to the real thing?

I ask because my wife and I are shopping for a home in another state, and we're looking at various models on-line. The reason I ask the question is that I've noticed something: When clicking through virtual tours of neighbors' homes (for example, this one owned by Barry Beck, what I'm seeing on the screen isn't exactly the house I know.

Maybe it's because I'm viewing a two-dimensional projection (albeit a pretty realistic one) of a space with which I'm familiar in three dimensions?

Just for example, I'm looking through a few of the interactive web-based tours of these homes: arthurrutenberghomes.com/interactive.aspx. Magnificent. Immaculate. Beautiful. Actual? I'm forced to wonder what they look like in real life. I guess we'll see.
